1. Before farmers can plant crops, they must prepare the soil. First, they clear away any weeds, bushes and other plant growth. Then they plow the soil to loosen it. A farmer in a tractor will use a plow to make long, deep grooves called furrows. Then he will cover the seeds with soil.

Farmers may spray or dust their crops with insect poisons. In recent years, some have shunned these sprays. They stay away from anything that may harm birds and other wildlife.

Crops can’t grow without water. When there is ample rainfall, there is more than enough water to meet the farmers’ needs. When there is little rainfall, the farmers need to use other ways to get water. They can use a windmill to pump the water. It gets its power from the wind.

A farmer who has cherished his crop will usually have a good harvest. He will have worked hard because he cares deeply about his crop.

2.

Ants are amazing insects.  They work together to build their anthill, to get their food, and to guard their queen ant.  Each ant has its own job to do, but they all work together.  The ants even fight together if other ants try to steal their food.

An anthill has several rooms, with tunnels leading from one room to another.  In one special room the queen ant lays her eggs.  The ants use some of the other rooms for storing their food.

During the day the ants go out to gather food.  Picnics are one favourite place for ants to collect food.  Little morsels of food dropped by the people make a big meal for tiny ants.  They carry the morsels of food they find on the ground back to their anthill.  They feed the queen ant and store the rest of the food to use later.

3.

The most serious earthquakes happen deep underground, along the edges of the earth’s plates. Usually, the plates stay jammed close together but from time to time a plate breaks away. This makes the ground shudder and shake. Sometimes it can even split wide open.

These shudders can be felt thousands of miles away because they spread out from the epicentre like the ripples from a stone thrown into a pond. Every year there are 40, 000 earthquakes that are strong enough to be felt. However, only about 40 of them are big enough to cause damage.
